Executive Summary
The KuppingerCole Leadership Compass provides an overview of a market segment and the vendors in that segment. It covers the trends that are influencing that market segment, how it is further divided, and the essential capabilities required of solutions. It also provides ratings of how well these solutions meet our expectations. This analysis is based on the KuppingerCole Leadership Compass Methodology.
This Leadership Compass covers solutions that provide an integrated set of security and compliance capabilities designed to protect cloud-native applications across development and production lifecycles.
Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) is used to develop and deliver new applications and reengineer existing ones as well as to store and process data. Cloud services provide an environment for accelerated development without the need for capital expenditure or lengthy procurement delays to obtain hardware. However, security is a shared responsibility for cloud services. Cloud Service Providers (CSP) take steps to secure the service they provide but it is up to the customer to secure how they use the services. CNAPP platforms provide integrated tools intended to help organizations using cloud services to identify and manage the risks for which they are responsible across the development and production lifecycle, both for low-level cloud-native infrastructure and cloud-based application workloads and services.
An important trend is that organizations are starting to adopt Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and Machine Learning (ML). This technology is not only being incorporated into the cloud apps but is also being used to create them. This creates further security challenges which include protecting the training data, GenAI services, models, and deployments. CNAPP solutions are now evolving to cover these challenges. Additionally, ML and GenAI can play a significant role in enhancing cybersecurity, by powering capabilities such as advanced threat detection and automated security processes, data sensitivity analysis, and improved disaster recovery.
We now expect CNAPP to include AI Security Posture Management (AI-SPM) providing visibility into the cloud GenAI services being used together with their controls and controls over the GenAI training data.
The distinctive feature of CNAPP solutions is the integration of several capabilities that were previously offered as standalone products. These include Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM) for identifying vulnerabilities and misconfigurations in cloud infrastructures, Cloud Workload Protection Platforms (CWPP) that deal with runtime protection of workloads deployed in the cloud (such as virtual machines, containers, and Kubernetes clusters, as well as databases and APIs), and Cloud Infrastructure Entitlement Management (CIEM) for centralized management of rights and permissions across multi-cloud environments. Cloud Detection and Response (CDR / XDR) is often included as well, combining capabilities to monitor web application firewalls, secure web gateways, and other web security tools.
The market for CNAPP solutions is growing rapidly due to the use of cloud-based applications to enable business digitalization, which brings a corresponding need for security. Key drivers in this market include the rising number of data breaches, stricter regulatory requirements, and the complexity of multi-cloud environments. CNAPP solutions offer automation, real-time monitoring, and advanced analytics, which are important for maintaining security in cloud settings.
The market for CNAPP solutions is now well established and based on our current research is estimated to be worth $11.43 billion in 2024 and is growing annually at 20%. The market is continuing to evolve with the emergence of cloud-native solutions that exploit AI and ML.
The large cloud service providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), and IBM all offer tools with CNAPP capabilities for their cloud. Google recently agreed to acquire Wiz, a popular CNAPP provider, which illustrates the importance of this market. Specialized security firms like Palo Alto Networks and CrowdStrike offer CNAPP solutions with cross-cloud capabilities. In addition, other IT risk management vendors such as Qualys offer capabilities that cover cloud services as well as non-cloud IT services.
Key Findings
The key findings from this report are:
- Most cloud security incidents result from failure by the cloud customer to adequately secure their use of the cloud service. However, each cloud features its own proprietary controls which adds to the cost and complexity of managing security.
- In response to this need, a market in cloud security point solutions, each aimed at specific cloud security problems, has created an alphabet soup of cloud security acronyms while adding to complexity and cost for the customer.
- CNAPP solutions are intended to provide an integrated platform providing capabilities needed by cloud customers to secure their use of hybrid multi-cloud from a single user interface with common polices and control structure.
- By providing an integrated platform CNAPP can reduce the complexity and cost of managing the security of hybrid multi-cloud deployments.
- The market for CNAPP is large and was last estimated at $11.43B with an annual growth rate of 20%. There is also consolidation taking place, in 2024 Fortinet acquired Lacework, in February 2025, Check Point partnered with Wiz, to supply their CNAPP, and in March 2025 Google agreed to acquire Wiz.
- Most CNAPP solutions now use ML to identify abnormal patterns of behavior. Many have now included capabilities based on GenAI to help to create queries, explain risks, and create or improve security policies.
- Organization and now using GenAI to enhance business operations and improve customer-facing applications. CNAPP solutions must now include capabilities to visualize and control GenAI use as well as secure GenAI training data.
- The overall leaders in the CNAPP market segment are (in alphabetical order): CrowdStrike, Fortinet, IBM, Microsoft, Palo Alto Networks, Qualys and Wiz.
